Who should use cars in an evacuation?

Who should use cars during a tsunami evacuation? This chapter combines detailed pedestrian and vehicle interactions with a model of changing streets and hazards. Demonstration simulations show how queues can offset the initial benefit of widespread car use, while restricting cars to slower evacuees improves the illustrated scenario. Results depend on the synthetic population, scenario, and calibrated interaction rules.

A detailed physical grid of a coastal city sits beside a simpler route graph representing the environment remembered by simulated agents.

The simulator combines a changing physical grid with a route graph that represents agents’ knowledge of the environment. Figure 2.
